CAQ Vol.7,No.1 4. On the Core and Contemporary Aesthetic Values of the Confucian and the Taoist Music

Abstract:The aesthetics of the Confucian and the Taoist music plays the motive of the Chinese classical music. Tao is the common value that they have been going after, the difference lying in that the Tao chased by the Confucian music attaches importance to the social value and that pursued by the Taoist music, the natural value. The lack of extreme desire as well as the weak motion for any drastic technical innovation in its overall construction resulted from the regulation of the grand Tao has led to the stagnation of the development of the Chinese traditional music. On the contrary, the problem of the Chinese contemporary music lies in the absence of Tao and the pursuit of Technicism and Hedonism. To overcome the limitations of the aesthetic values and further promote the merits of the traditional Chinese music, called for by this era, the construction of the contemporary Chinese music must be a combination of the technical development and the maintenance of the Tao, so as to eventually provoke people’s yearning for the beauty in arts, society, and humanity.
