CAQ Vol.9,No.4,2022 On Mughal’s Miniatures from the Perspective of Iconology: with Akbar's Miniatures as an Example

August 26, 2023

Abstract: In early twentieth-century Germany, some art history researchers intended to reorganize art history in the context of modern humanities and social sciences, paying more attention to the interpretation of art rather than the examination of images. Aby Warbur and his followers, Fritz Sachs and Erwin Panofsky, in order to understand the subject and the meaning of the images, offered a method of identifying and classifying images themes. Panofsky also considered in the third stage of his iconography study that the study of images meaning and interpretation should involve three stages in that images have reproductive, imitative, ornatural meaning. In this paper, the author will not only explore the third stage of Panofsky's understanding of the image, but also provide insight into the inner meaning of Akbar's Miniatures.

Key words: iconographic perspective, miniatures, Indian Akbar Dynasty
