The 2nd Stage of Chinese Art History Research in Europe and America

                                                         ——From Comprehending the Painting Itself to Constructing the Research Methods of the Historical Sociology of Art History
  Abstract: The research into Chinese art history in Europe and America in the 20th century mainly experienced three stages: from looking for inspirations to rediscovering Chinese art, from comprehending the Chinese painting itself to constructing the research methods of the historical sociology of art history, and from the research into the history of Chinese painting and calligraphy and research methods of the historical sociology of art history under the trend of structuralism to the research methods of visual culture. This paper focuses on the second stage. By sorting relevant materials, the essay arrives at the following conclusion: in the mid 20th century, the European and American scholars paid more attention to the researches into the situations and sponsorship. And then, they gradually utilized the research methods of Marxism and those of historical sociology of art history under its influence to construct new research room, which promoted the overall research of Chinese art history.
