CAQ Vol.5,No.4,2018 Report of “The Social History of Chinese Arts Week” at Central China Normal University

Editor’s Notes: Academic events entitled as “The Social History of Chinese Arts Week” which is centered upon “Forum on the Frontier of Chinese Arts History: Diversity and Interactivity” were held at Central China Normal University (CCNU) from December 6 to 11, 2018, sponsored jointly by the Editorial Office of Chinese Arts Quarterly, the School of History and Culture of CCNU, the Research Center of Chinese Art and Social History, and Wenjin Institute for Education and Cultural Research. Nearly a hundred experts and scholars at home and abroad were invited to attend the symposium and a field trip of artistic archaeology in order to encourage academic communication and scholarly interaction between different cultures and values, and subsequently promote extensive and rigorous studies on art history and art theory. Six lectures were given by Professor Lin Jinzhong who is the former vice president of Taiwan University of the Arts, Researcher Zhou Qian from the Institute of Gugong Studies at The Palace Museum Research Institute, Researcher Wang Qingwei from the Xi’an Stele Museum, Researcher Fan Liya from the Institute of Oriental and Occidental Studies at Kansai University, Professor Fan Zhaofei who is the vice president of History Society of the Chinese Wei,Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties and professor of the Department of History at Shanghai Normal University, and Professor Joseph Lam from the School of Music, Theater and Dance of the University of Michigan. The events addressed a diverse range of topics in art, literature, music and performance, including innovative approaches to Chinese art history,research methods in the study of Chinese art theory, research on art history archives and antiquities, the relationships between ancient visual arts and creative environment, the Chu art, and multidisciplinary and multicultural discussions of Chinese arts. Interdisciplinary studies in philosophy,aesthetics, theology, archaeology, sociology, the intellectual history, and the history of culture were correspondingly highlighted. In their specific discussions, the scholars closely related their case studies and regional research with the global art history. They not only took the Chinese historical and national stance to comprehend the traditional Chinese arts but also paid close attention to the western artistic traditions and contemporary thoughts, opening up an unprecedentedly broad prospect for the studies in the Chinese art history. For further discussion by the academic community,summaries of the academic conference and the six lectures are presented as follows.
