Aesthetic Transformation in the Transcultural Reception of Chinese Figure Painting

ABSTRACT: The thesis discusses the reasons why the Cernuschi Museum prefers to collect Chinese figure paintings and as well as analyzes European inclination for Chinese painting collection at the end of 19th century. Through the analysis of the themes, styles, techniques, and painting traditions, it attempts to explore European appreciation of Chinese traditional paintings and the underlying aesthetic transformation in the transcultural reception.
