Birth of the Early Chinese Classical Calligraphy Theory

ABSTRACT: Originating in the Han and Wei dynasties and developed in the Jin dynasties, the basic framework of the Chinese classical calligraphy theory was finally established during the Six dynasties, marked by the appearance of mature calligraphy treatises. Therefore, the periods from the Han and Wei dynasties to the Six dynasties, were the time when Chinese calligraphy was consciously refined by scholars, and calligraphy theory during these periods, reflecting such self-consciousness, is attracting more and more academic attention. On the basis of the previous researches, this article aims to give a brief introduction to the extant major literature of early Chinese calligraphy theory (their titles, sources and main ideas), and points out their significance and major contributions to later studies.

Key words: calligraphy theory; Six Dynasties; literary theory and criticism
