Acceptance and Evaluation of Chinese-Style Paintings in Contemporary Japanese Painting Courses
—with the Case Study of the Painting Curriculum at Tsukuba University
ABSTRACT: This paper examines the acceptance and evaluation of Chinese paintings in contemporary Japanese style paintings in reference to
the course “Replication of Classic Works” in Japanese style painting study at Tsukuba University. A survey is also conducted on how Chinese paintings are used for imitation and reproduction at some other Japanese universities containing the art school. Based on the situation in Tsukuba University and the research findings, this paper aims at exploring the relationship between the development of the Japanese Style painting and the use of the exquisite art works of the Song Dynasty for the sake of an “interdisciplinary” and “international” future of the fine arts of Japan.
