The Verbal-visual Appropriation in Modern Chinese Art and Literature
Abstract:As a common phenomenon in artistic creation, the term “verbal-visual appropriation” refers to the mutual implanting between two different artistic symbols: texts and images. In some cases, words and language texts are added to paintings and graphic arts. Similarly, illustrations, symbols and other means of imagery are added to literary books. In other cases, visual arts use lexicons and literary texts as sources of creation, and the literary works induce visual grammar logic to organize words and sentences, or pay attention to the stimulation of visual experience of texts. This article takes the material of Chinese modern art history as a typical case to discuss the different types of this appropriation, its original source and context, the semantic role it has, the similarities and differences between it and other similar phenomena, and the transitional significance in the modern time.
